Lost my uncle in a Hit & Run case!

Almost a month ago, a distant relative of mine (my uncle) lost his life in a hit-and-run accident in the Shikrapur area of Pune. The incident occurred around 8 p.m. while he was on his way to pick up his elder daughter from work. Usually, he would cycle to her workplace, but due to heavy rain that day, he decided to walk instead. In his hurry, he left his phone behind. When his daughter returned home on her own about an hour later, the whole family grew worried about his whereabouts. They searched for him but couldn’t find him. Eventually, they went to the nearest police station, where they were informed about an accident. The police showed them some clothes, which the daughter immediately recognised as her father’s. His body had been sent to the nearest hospital, where the family went to identify him.

According to the police, he was walking along the road when a speeding car hit him from behind, throwing him onto a stack of iron rods. The impact caused the rods to pierce his body, and he reportedly died on the spot. The driver fled the scene. It was dark, and the heavy rain made it impossible to see the car’s number plate. An FIR was filed, but the person responsible was nowhere to be found.

This incident shook our family to its core. We can’t even begin to imagine the trauma his daughter must have felt seeing her father in that state. He leaves behind three daughters and his wife, who were already struggling financially. He was working two jobs to support them, and in an instant, their world collapsed. Our family and other relatives are doing what we can to support them financially and help rebuild their lives. Even after weeks we had no information on who was this driver. We honestly lost hopes that the family will ever get any justice. However today, the police informed us that they had tracked down the culprit but suggested settling the matter outside of court for a nominal amount. This really infuriated me!! We refused and have hired a lawyer to fight in the court!

Could this tragedy have been avoided? Maybe if there had been better visibility on the road. Maybe if the driver had taken him to the hospital immediately after the accident. Maybe if the iron rods hadn’t been left out in the open. I honestly don’t know, and it doesn’t matter at this point. The family has lost everything.

The point of this post is to highlight that while we are fortunate and privileged enough to support his family, not everyone has that luxury. Personally this was a reminder to us that its a curse to be poor in this country. Without connections or money, there is a high probability that you will never get any justice. We must hold our government accountable and demand a stronger judicial system. We need good roads to avoid such incidents in the future!
